MATCH REPORT 1st SAL PETERBOROUGH 17TH MAY MATCH RESULT - 4th

Our first match of the season was at Peterborough against Watford, Cambridge & Coleridge, Peterborough & Nene, Basildon, and St Albans. It was quite a long journey up the A1 and felt distinctly chilly when we got there.

However, the day got off to the best possible start in the women 400m hurdles with Louise Grenfell and Laura Armorgie gaining maximum points in their respective races. Finley Norman, in his first hurdles race, gained 3rd place in the men 400mH.

Meanwhile in the field, Jason Kingwell had started the first of the three throwing events he did throughout the day. Also in the field, Alex Roberts gained 2nd place in a very good high jump competition.

In the short sprints, we saw some of our junior athletes competing for the first time at the SAL with Victoria Akhigbe (U17) 2nd A string 100m, Amelia Lakes 2nd B string and Charlie Durr(U17) running the A string in the men 100m and 200m (gaining a PB of 24.9 in 200m). In the womens 200m Penielle Oyelaja (U17) came 3rd with a PB of 26.2.

In the 800m races we scored 4th in mens A and B string- Jack Offord and Steven Prosser were our runners. 

Both men and women featured strongly in the 400m. The ladies took 1st in A string (Louise Grenfell) and 2nd in B string (newcomer Ellie Simpson). In the men 400m, Scott Gunning, another newcomer, gained 1st place. 

In the 5K we witnessed a father and son combo (Caleb and Martin O’Neil). joined also by Cameron Bailey.The race was won beautifully by Caleb, Cameron 3rd in B string and Martin finished with a time of 18.12.3 

Jennie Cox came 3rd in the 1500m ladies race and Ben Murphy and Mati Benveniste came 2nd and 1st respectively in A and B string for the mens race.

Amelie Horn did all 3 jumps, scoring 1st in HJ and TJ and 2nd in LJ and took part in the 4×100 relay.  Amelia Lakes did LJ and HJ and came 2nd and 1st respectively in B string. Ellie Simpson tried TJ for the first time and gained valuable points coming 4th. Jess Downing took maximum points in the short hurdles as well as competing in discus and shot. Oscar Freame took part in the maximum number of events for his age group and would have done more!  scoring points in Javelin,TJ, LJ and relay. 

Another newcomer Lizzie Every took 1st place in javelin and Casey Wilson took 2nd in men javelin. In the steeple chase Mati Benveniste and Grant Ramsay took good points for the men (the first of many steeplechases we hope).

Our mens relay teams stormed round to take 2nd place in both 4×100 and 4 x400 taking us to the end of the match on a now beautifully sunny evening.

Despite many gaps in the team, we came 4th which is encouraging with the remaining matches a lot nearer home.  So well done to all the athletes, you have all gained valuable points for the team.
