Met League 2025 Season Race Report
Race 4: Stanborough Park, Welwyn Garden City
Our home fixture saw a strong contingent of 48 Herts Phoenix athletes race at the fourth of the Met League cross country series on Saturday 10th January at Stanborough Park, Welwyn Garden City.
Taking the opportunity of a home race, eight athletes took part in the U11 races, many making their debut at the Met League. Henry Bostock (4th) in the U11 boys recorded yet another highest finish of the season.
In the U13 boys race, Josh Maiden (1st) made a fast start on home turf and extended his lead throughout the race to a convincing victory. Thomas Summers (7th) in his best placing of the season, Henry Wakefield (23rd) and James Adam-Smith (32nd) making his league debut, made up the scoring team. The team sit in a comfortable second place overall for the season.
In the Junior Men (U15/U17) a squad of twelve took on the challenging home course. Jake Summers (1st) tracked the lead group, and with half a lap remaining kicked ahead, spurred on by the home support, to take his first victory in this age category. Sean Mazur (11th), Freddie Hollings-Yates (23th) and Alexander Shoesmith (24th) completed the first scoring team, placing joint third team in the race overall. In the season so far the junior boys are in second place.

In the Junior Women (U15/U17), Cora Naylor (5th), Jess Lane (18th) Penny Field (23rd), and Hazel Spitzer (24th) formed the scoring team, and retain third place for the season overall this far.
In the senior races Harriet Kealy (10th) ran a superb race, with Grace Mason (95th) and Ellie Mason (114th) completing the Herts Phoenix team.
In the senior men’s race, John Eves (13th and first Vet), followed by Ben Murphy (18th and first U20) continued their excellent performances in the league this year. The strong squad of 16 recorded their best team result this year, finishing a very close second place in division 2.
