SAL MATCH REPORT TEAM ELTHAM 13TH JULY

We all had our ‘getting there’ stories when we arrived at Eltham – most were without a hitch and it was good to see so many Herts Phoenix athletes sitting in the sunshine ready for action.

First events of the day were the ladies hammer, pole vault and long jump and men’s high jump, hammer and 400m hurdles for both.

Notable results were from Erin Breen jumping 2.60m in the pole vault to gain 2nd place and to James Grove for stepping in (or over) to clear 1.03 in the High Jump with Zac Lewis competing in a string.

Amelia Lakes took first place in her debut 400m hurdles race and Fin Norman got a PB 0f 61.16 in his race with Oscar Edmondson also doing 400m hurdles for the 1st time and placing 2nd in the b race.

Isabella Hatfield came 4th in LJ with Isabella Bolger 2nd in b string.

Jason Kingwell came 2nd in a string hammer with James Grove 1st in b string.

Next events were 800m, 100m, 400m, womens shot and javelin, mens long jump and men’s shot.

Jack Offord won the men’s 800m convincingly in 2.00.16 with Joseph Slater coming 3rd in the b string. Oscar did his 2nd 400m of the day coming 5th with Ollie Curran taking 4th in b string. The ladies 400m was covered by Bethany Botheras and Ellie Simpson with Beth 3rd in a string and Ellie 1st in b string with a PB of 64.10. Newcomer Chloe Clements ran as a non-scorer and finished in an impressive  63.10s.

In the 100m for men Charlie Durr took 5th place in the a race and Andre Ovbiagele ran a PB of 11.92 to take 3rd in the b race. For the women  – Serena Thomas  came 2nd in a string and Penielle Oyelaja  took 2nd place in b string Penielle coming back from her English Schools debut the day before.

In the Javelin Jess Downing threw a PB of 22.18 M to come 2nd in a string.

In the men’s shot Jason and James both placed 3rd and in men’s long jump Charlie Durr came 3rd in a string and Andre Ovbiagele came 1st in b string.

After a break on the track we had 100m hurdles, womens 3k, mens 5k, both 200m, and both 1500m with mens javelin, ladies high jump, both triple jumps and both discus.

Our woman’s a string 100m hurdler was Amelie Horn and sadly she took a nasty tumble on a hurdle but managed to get up and finish the race, b string was Isabella Hatfield who won her race – both girls new to this event. Sisters Eleanor and Grace Mason braved the heat to do the 3k finishing 5th and 2nd respectively in a and b strings. Caleb O’Neil won his 5k with a spectacular finish and newcomer Mayank Mishra took 2nd place in b string – another very hot race. 

In the 200m Serena Thomas took 1st place in a string with Victoria Akhigbe 2nd in b string Victoria also just returned from her debut English Schools.

In the men’s 200m Charlie and Andre placed 5th and 3rd respectively.

The 1500m saw Caleb and Thomas Anderson both finishing 4th.

In the triple jump Amelie Horn and Ellie Simpson took 2nd and 3rd in a and b string, and for the men Oscar Edmondson and Alfredo Whitehead Benitez took 4th and 2nd places Alfredo doing triple jump for the 1st time.

The men’s javelin competition finished with both our competitors Caysey Wilson and Ollie Curran in 3rd place in the a and b strings.

In the ladies’ high jump Amelie Horn took joint 1st place in a string and Amelia Lakes 1st in b string.

In women’s discus Jessica Downing took 4th in a string and Arabella Ashby 3rd in b string in the men’s event James and Jason finished 3rdplace in a and b respectively, thanks to these athletes for covering the heavy throws.  

Which takes us to the last events of the day steeple chase and relays.

The intrepid Mason sisters took to the track again to do the steeple chase Grace finishing 2nd in a string and Eleanor 1st in b string with at least a chance to dip in the water jump each lap to cool off. Men’s steeple chase saw newcomer Thomas Anderson doing the 7.5 laps for the 1st time and taking over as the a string runner as Grant Ramsay had to pull out injured. Thomas did a great job finishing 3rd in a string and he felt quite cool at the end!

The 4x 100 relays were exciting races with our ladies finishing a close 3rd and the men finishing  2nd in their race.

In the 4x400m the ladies came a decisive 1st with the men in 2nd place when it was their turn.

 It was a really enjoyable day with great individual and team results. Over all we came 2nd but it was close so hoping for a 1st place at our home match next time (30th August)

It was also very hot! A big thank you to everyone who came and competed, supported or officiated.
